✧ Regarding His words, Blessed and Exalted: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance. You are not accountable for them in anything, nor are they accountable for you in anything, that you should drive them away and thus be of the wrongdoers" (Qur'an 6:52). He said: Al-Aqra' b. Habis and 'Uyaynah b. Hisn al-Fazari ؓ came and found the Prophet ﷺ sitting with Bilal, Suhayb, Khabbab ؓ and some of the weak believers. When they saw them around him ﷺ, they despised them. They came to him and had a private audience with him ﷺ. They said: 'We would like you to make for yourself a special gathering with us, through which the Arabs will recognize our superiority. Indeed, we are the nobles of the Arabs; delegations come to you, and we feel ashamed that the Arabs should see us with these slaves. When we come to you, dismiss them from us; then when we have finished, seat them if you wish.' He ﷺ said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Then write for us a document to that effect.' So he ﷺ called for a parchment and called 'Ali ؓ to write, while we were sitting in a corner. Then Gabriel (peace and blessings be upon him) descended with His saying, Exalted: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance..." up to His saying: "...of the wrongdoers" (Qur'an 6:52). Then He, Majestic and Exalted, said: "And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say: 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy upon Himself'" (Qur'an 6:54). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw the parchment from his hand, then called us, and we came to him while he ﷺ was saying: 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy upon Himself.' We drew near to him ﷺ until we placed our knees on his knee. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sit with us, and when he wanted to rise, he would rise and leave us. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance, and do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of this worldly life" (Qur'an 18:28). He said: So he sat with the nobles. "And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance" (Qur'an 18:28), referring to 'Uyaynah and al-Aqra', "and who follows his own desire, and whose affair is ever in neglect" (Qur'an 18:28) — meaning destruction. Then He struck for them the parable of two men and the parable of the life of this world. Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sit with us, and when the time came for him to rise, we would rise and leave him; otherwise he ﷺ would remain patient forever until we rose."
