✧ Regarding the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: “And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face.” He said: 'Uyaynah b. Hisn and al-Aqra' b. Habis came and found the Prophet ﷺ sitting with Bilal, 'Ammar, Suhayb, and Khabbab b. al-Aratt among some of the weak believers. When they saw them around him, they looked down on them. So they came to him and had a private audience with him, and said: “We would like you to give us a share of your time so that the Arabs will recognize us through you, for the delegations of the Arabs come to you, and we feel ashamed that the Arabs should see us with these slaves. So when we come to you, dismiss them, and when we have finished, seat them again if you wish.” He said: “Yes.” They said: “Write a document for us.” He called for a sheet to write for them, and he called 'Ali to write for them, while we were sitting in a corner when Gabriel ﷺ descended with this verse: “And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. You are not accountable for them in anything, nor are they accountable for you in anything, that you should drive them away and thus be among the wrongdoers.” Then he mentioned al-Aqra' and his companion, saying: “And thus We have tried some of them by others, that they may say: Are these the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor from among us? Does Allah not know best those who are grateful?” Then he mentioned: “And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say: Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself: that whoever of you does evil out of ignorance…” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw the sheet aside, and I will never forget him saying: “Peace be upon you.” We drew near to him that day until we placed our knees upon his knee. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit with us before that, and when he wanted to stand, he would stand and leave us. Then Allah Almighty revealed: “And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face, and do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of the worldly life.” He says: the assemblies of the nobles. “And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever in neglect.” As for the one whose heart We have made heedless, he is 'Uyaynah and al-Aqra' b. Habis. And as for “in neglect” (furut), it means destruction. Then He struck for them the parable of two men and the parable of the worldly life. He said: We used to sit with the Prophet ﷺ, and when we reached the hour at which he used to stand, we would rise and leave him until he stood whenever he stood.
