وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ، ثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، ثَنَا أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الشَّجَرَةِ ؓ قَالَ:
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا جَلَسَ النَّاسُ مِنْ حَوْلِهِ صَلَّى صَلَاةً خَفِيفَةً تَامَّةَ الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ، فَسَجَدَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ، حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنِ اسْكُتُوا فَإِنَّهُ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنَّهُ نَزَلَ عَلَيْكَ. قَالَ ﷺ: لَا، وَلَكِنَّهَا كَانَتْ صَلَاةَ رَغْبَةٍ وَرَهْبَةٍ، سَأَلْتُ اللهَ تَعَالَى ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً، سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسْحِتَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍ عَذَّبَ بِهِ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَى عَامَّتِكُمْ عَدُوًّا يَسْتَبِيحُهَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ فَمَنَعَنِيهَا » قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ أَبُوكَ، سَمِعْتَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَدَدَ أَصَابِعِهِ هَذِهِ عَشْرًا

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat with the people around him, he would pray a brief but complete prayer, with full bowing and prostration. One day he prostrated and prolonged the prostration, until some of us gestured to others to be quiet, for revelation was descending upon him. When he finished, some of the people said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the prostration until some of us gestured to others that revelation was descending upon you.' He ﷺ said: 'No, but it was a prayer of hope and fear. I asked Allah Almighty for three things: He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy you with a punishment like that with which He punished those before you, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set over your general populace an enemy who would exterminate them, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to divide you into factions and make you taste the violence of one another, but He withheld that from me.'" He (the narrator) said: I said to him: 'Your father—did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' He mentioned that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as many times as his fingers—these ten."
