✧ I used to go regularly to Abū al-Dardāʾ ؓ and heard him narrating from the Prophet of God ﷺ that he said: “A messenger from my Lord, Mighty and Glorious, came to me and said: ‘And whoever does evil or wrongs himself, then seeks God’s forgiveness, will find God Forgiving, Merciful’ (Q 4:110). The verse before it had been hard on them: ‘Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it’ (Q 4:123). So I wanted to give glad tidings to my companions. I said: ‘O Messenger of God, even if he commits adultery and steals, then seeks God’s forgiveness, He will forgive him?’ He ﷺ said: ‘Yes.’ Then I said: ‘The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Yes, in spite of ʿUwaymir’s nose.’ Then Kaʿb b. Dhuhl ؓ said: ‘I saw Abū al-Dardāʾ ؓ tapping his own nose with his finger.’”
