✧ The Remainder of the Warning Against Showing Off

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا قَدِمَ عَلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: كَيْفَ أَنْتُمْ وَالضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ؓ ؟ قَالَ: نَحْنُ وَهُوَ إِذَا لَقِينَاهُ قُلْنَا لَهُ مَا يُحِبُّ، وَإِذَا وَلَّيْنَا عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: ذَلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَعُدُّ وَنَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ

Translation

✧ A man came to Ibn ʿUmar ؓ, and he said to him: "How are you and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays ؓ?" He said: "We and he, when we meet him, we say to him what he likes, and when we turn away from him, we say something else." He said: "That is what we used to consider hypocrisy while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
