✧ Ghurafa b. al-Ḥārith ؓ, who was a Companion, mentioned the ḥadīth. He said: Ghurafa said to ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ ؓ: 'When you sit with us, you recline among us. Do not do that; if you do it again, I will write to ʿUmar ؓ.' ʿAmr ؓ did it again, so Ghurafa wrote. ʿUmar's messenger came to ʿAmr ؓ and said: 'It has reached me that when you sit with your companions you recline among them as the Persians do. Do not do that; sit with them as long as you sit. When you enter your house, do what seems good to you.' ʿAmr said to Ghurafa ؓ: 'Now it is established against me before ʿUmar.' Ghurafa said: 'You have never known me to be a liar.' He said: After that, ʿAmr ؓ would intend to recline, then remember and sit up, saying: 'God is between me and Ghurafa.' He said: One day they went out on a foggy day. Ghurafa's horse advanced ahead of ʿAmr's horse. ʿAmr said: 'My day with Ghurafa is not one.' It was said to Ghurafa: 'The amir said such and such.' He said: 'I did not see him because of the fog.' It was said: 'Then apologize to him.' He said: 'Do not accustom them to this.' They kept at him until he came to him and said: 'I did not see you because of the fog.' He said: 'O God, forgive me! If you wished, you could have held back your horse.' He said: 'By God, I wish it had thrown you into the farthest stone of the meadow, and I would apologize to you because of the fog; I did not see you, and you say, "O God, forgive me?"' ʿAmr said: 'O Abū al-Ḥārith, I saw you with the Messenger of God ﷺ on such-and-such a day on a docile horse. Shall we not mount you on a horse?' He said: 'I have never known you, O ʿAmr, to mount horses. Where does this come from?'
