✧ Disciplining the governor who conceals himself from the subjects or elevates himself above them

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّانَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبَايَةَ بْنَ رِفَاعَةَ يَقُولُ:

بَلَغَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَنَّ سَعْدًا ؓ اتَّخَذَ بَابًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: انْقَطَعَ الصَّوْتُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ ؓ فَحَرَّقَهُ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ ؓ بِيَدِهِ فَأَخْرَجَهُ وَقَالَ: هَاهُنَا اجْلِسْ لِلنَّاسِ. فَاعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ ؓ، وَحَلَفَ لَهُ مَا تَكَلَّمْتُ الْكَلِمَةَ الَّتِي بَلَغَتْ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Translation

✧ It reached the Commander of the Faithful ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ that Saʿd ؓ had installed a door and then said: 'The sound has ceased.' So ʿUmar ؓ sent to him and burned it. Then Muḥammad b. Maslama ؓ took him by the hand and brought him out, saying: 'Sit here for the people.' Saʿd ؓ apologized to him and swore to him: 'I did not utter the word that reached the Commander of the Faithful.'
