✧ I witnessed Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ while he was accepting the pledge of allegiance from the people after the death of the Messenger of God ﷺ. A group would gather around him and he would say to them: "Pledge allegiance to me upon hearing and obedience to God and His Book, then to the commander." I clung to my whip, and I was at that time a boy who had reached puberty or around that. When those with him had dispersed, I came to him and said: "I pledge allegiance to you upon hearing and obedience to God and His Book, and to the commander." He said: "He looked me up and down."
