✧ The year of famine pressed hard upon us, [affecting] Nabighah b. Ja'dah, while we were with Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ in Makkah. He stood after leading the people in the morning prayer in the Sacred Mosque and said: "You have imitated for us al-Siddiq when you governed us, and Uthman and al-Faruq, so the destitute rejoiced. Abu Layla came to you, cleaving through the darkness, the darkness of night, a traverser of the desert, sturdy. So that you might raise a side that the vicissitudes of nights and the calamitous time have shattered." Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ said to him: "Restrain yourself, Abu Layla, for poetry is the least of your means to us. As for the choice of our wealth, it belongs to the family of al-Zubayr. As for its surplus, the Banu Asad keep us preoccupied from you. But you have two rights in the wealth of God: a right due to your seeing the Messenger of God ﷺ, and a right due to your partnership with the people of Islam." He ordered that mounts be loaded for him with grain and dates. Abu Layla began to hasten and eat from the dates and grain, while Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ said to him: "Hardship has taken its toll on you, Abu Layla." When he had satisfied his appetite, he said: "I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Quraysh have not governed but they have been just; have not been asked for mercy but they have shown mercy; have not spoken but they have spoken truth; and have not promised good but they have fulfilled it. So I and the prophets will be at the forefront of the Hawd for those who are driven away.'"
