✧ ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar ؓ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ: "Seek for me the daughter of Ṣāliḥ in marriage." He said: "He has orphans, and he would not prefer us over them." So ʿAbd Allah went to his paternal uncle Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb to seek her hand for him. He took him to Ṣāliḥ and said: "ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar sent me to you to ask for your daughter's hand." He said: "I have orphans, and I would not let my own flesh suffer while raising yours in status. I call you to witness that I have married her to so-and-so." Her mother's inclination was towards ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar ؓ, so she came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar proposed to my daughter, but her father married her to an orphan under his care without consulting her." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Ṣāliḥ and said: "You married off your daughter without consulting her?" He said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Consult women about themselves," twice. Then Ṣāliḥ said: "I only did this because of what Ibn ʿUmar would give her as a dowry, for she has from my wealth the like of what he would give her."
