عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءً، أَنَّ أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ الشَّاعِرَ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ:
بَلَغَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنِّي أَصُومُ فَأَسْرِدُ، وَأُصَلِّي اللَّيْلَ، فَإِمَّا أَرْسَلَ، وَإِمَّا لَقِيتُهُ، فَقَالَ: أَلَمْ أُخْبَرْ أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ فَلَا تُفْطِرُ، وَتُصَلِّي، فَلَا تَفْعَلْ؛ فَإِنَّ لِعَيْنِكَ حَظًّا، وَلِنَفْسِكَ حَظًّا، فَصُمْ، وَأَفْطِرْ، وَصُمْ مِنْ عَشَرَةِ أَيَّامٍ يَوْمًا، وَلَكَ أَجْرُ تِسْعَةٍ "، قَالَ: إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي أَقْوَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ قَالَ: " فَصُمْ صِيَامَ دَاوُدَ "، قَالَ: وَكَيْفَ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا، وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا، وَلَا يَفِرُّ إِذَا لَاقَى " قَالَ عَطَاءٌ: فَلَا أَدْرِي كَيْفَ ذَكَرَ صِيَامَ الْأَبَدِ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: لَا صَامَ مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ، لَا صَامَ مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ
Translation
✧ It reached the Prophet ﷺ that I was fasting continuously and praying at night. Either he sent for me or I met him, and he said: “Have I not been told that you fast without breaking it and pray? Do not do that, for your eyes have a share over you and your soul has a share over you. Fast and break the fast, and fast one day out of every ten, and you will have the reward of nine.” He said: “I find myself stronger than that, O Prophet of God.” He said: “Then fast the fast of David.” He said: “How did he use to fast, O Messenger of God?” He said: “He used to fast one day and break the fast one day, and he would not flee when he met the enemy.” ‘Ata’ said: I do not know how he mentioned perpetual fasting, but the Prophet ﷺ said: “May he not fast who fasts perpetually; may he not fast who fasts perpetually.”
