Yahya related to me from Malik from Ubaydullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman that Ubayd ibn Hunayn, the mawla of the family of Zayd ibn al Khattab, said that he had heard Abu Hurayra say, "I was going along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he heard a man reciting Surat al-Ikhlas (Sura 112). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It is obligatory,' and I asked him, 'What is, Messenger of Allah?' and he said, 'The Garden.' I wanted to tell the man the good news but I was afraid that I would miss the midday meal with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I preferred to eat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I went to the man afterwards I found that he had gone."

Ḥunayn, from Abū Hurayrah. Others said ʿAbd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Al-Shāfiʿī, ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar and al-Qaʿnabī said: from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn also narrated this ḥadīth from Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, from Mālik, from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Abū Hurayrah. None of these narrators said "from Ibn Udhaynah" except Yaḥyā. I said: What is the name of Ibn Udhaynah? He said: I do not know him. Abū ʿAbdullāh Muḥammad b. Makhlad narrated to us: Jaʿfar b. Abī ʿUthmān al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us: Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn narrated to us: Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd narrated to us, from Mālik, who said: ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: I was with the Prophet ﷺ, and he heard a man reciting "Say: He is Allah, the One". He said: "It is obligatory." I said: What is obligatory? He said: "Paradise."
