from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Indeed, ˹calendar months˺ have returned to its original state, as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar, which is between the two Jumads and Sha‘ban.” Then he said: “Which month is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a another name. He said: “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which land is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Baldah (Sacred Precinct)?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which day is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said: Yes. He said: “Indeed, your blood and your wealth” —Muhammad said, and I think he also said— “and your honor are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. So do not return after me misguided, striking the necks of one another. Let the one who is present convey to the one who is absent, for perhaps some who are informed will comprehend it better than some who heard it.”
