What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

    machine translationA good (ḥasan) hadith.

machine translationAbū Zurʿah said: Ḥammād b. Salamah made an error in it. The correct version is what Shuʿbah and Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated from Budayl b. Maysarah, from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from Rāshid b. Saʿd, from Abū ʿĀmir al-Hawzanī, from al-Miqdām al-Kindī, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The maternal uncle is the heir of one who has no heir." This is the text of the hadith of Shuʿbah. The text of the hadith of Ḥammād b. Zayd is: "The maternal uncle is the patron (mawlā) of one who has no patron; he inherits his wealth and frees his captive."

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationRāshid b. Saʿd narrates it, and there is disagreement about it from him. Budayl b. Maysarah narrated it from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from Rāshid b. Saʿd, from Abū ʿĀmir al-Hawzanī, from al-Miqdām; Shuʿbah, Ḥammād b. Zayd and Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān related it. Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ differed from them and narrated it from Rāshid b. Saʿd, from al-Miqdām, without mentioning Abū ʿĀmir. The first is closer to the correct view.

machine translationRāshid heard this report from Abū ʿĀmir al-Hawzanī, from al-Miqdām, and he also heard it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿĀʾidh al-Azdī, from al-Miqdām. Both routes are therefore preserved (maḥfūẓ), and their texts differ from each other.

machine translationShuʿbah, Ḥammād and Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān narrated it from Budayl, from Ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, from Rāshid, from Abū ʿĀmir, from al-Miqdām. Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ differed from them and did not mention ʿĀmir between Rāshid and al-Miqdām. The first is closer to the correct view.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis hadith is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī). It was narrated by Rāshid b. Saʿd and Abū ʿĀmir ʿAbdullāh b. Luḥayy al-Hawzanī, both of whom the two Shaykhs use as evidence. It is a hadith that is disputed, and Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh narrated it, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).
