What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is that it is halted at him (mawqūf), i.e. a statement of Ibn ʿUmar.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationHe said: it is the sound one, meaning the mawqūf version.

  • Badr al-Dīn al-ʿAynī

machine translationʿAbthar b. al-Qāsim: Aḥmad said, truthful, trustworthy (ṣadūq thiqah); Abū Dāwūd said, trustworthy, trustworthy (thiqah thiqah); and the Group (al-Jamāʿah) narrated from him. He narrates from al-Ashʿath, who is Ibn Sawwār al-Kindī al-Kūfī, as al-Mizzī stated explicitly. Yaḥyā declared him trustworthy in his narration, and Muslim narrated from him in corroborating reports (mutābaʿāt), as did the Four. And Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā: al-ʿIjlī said, he was a jurist, a man of the Sunnah, truthful (ṣadūq), acceptable in ḥadīth (jāʾiz al-ḥadīth); the Four narrated from him. So when such men raise a ḥadīth to the Prophet (rafʿ), it is not rejected from them, because they have additional knowledge.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis ḥadīth is not sound, for Muḥammad b. Abī Laylā committed many errors (kathīr al-wahm), and the companions of Nāfiʿ narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationIt is an error in two respects: one, that its chain was raised to the Prophet ﷺ, when it is only a statement of Ibn ʿUmar; the other, his saying "half a ṣāʿ", when he only said "a mudd of wheat".

  • Ishbīlī

machine translationʿAbd al-Ḥaqq declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) in his Aḥkām because of Ashʿath and Ibn Abī Laylā.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is that it is a statement of the Companion (mawqūf). Thus it was narrated by ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bakht, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, may God Most High be pleased with them both.

  • al-Tirmidhi

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is that it is halted (mawqūf).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationStrange (gharīb). We do not know it as a raised report (marfūʿ) except through this route, and the sound view is that it is halted (mawqūf) at Ibn ʿUmar.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is that it is halted at Ibn ʿUmar.
