  • Ibn Khuzaymah

machine translationIf Zā'idah preserved the chain of transmission he mentioned, then Sulaymān heard it from Ḥabīb, and Ḥabīb from ʿAbdah, and both of them are mudallis (those who practise tadlīs). So it is possible that ʿAbdah narrated the report at one time, long ago, from Suwayd b. Ghafalah from Abū al-Dardāʾ without doubt, and then afterwards doubted whether he had heard it from Zirr b. Ḥubaysh or from Suwayd, and whether it was from Abū al-Dardāʾ or from Abū Dharr. For between Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit and both al-Thawrī and Ibn ʿUyaynah there is an age gap such that a man may forget much of what he used to memorise. If Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit heard this report from ʿAbdah, it is likely that he heard it before Ibn ʿUyaynah was born, because Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit was perhaps older than ʿAbdah b. Abī Lubābah. Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit had heard from Ibn ʿUmar. And God knows best which of these chains is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) one.
