✧ There was fighting among the Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf, and that reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he prayed Zuhr, then went to them to make peace between them. Then he said to Bilal, "O Bilal, if 'Asr prayer comes and I have not come, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." When 'Asr prayer came, Bilal called the adhan, then the iqamah, then said to Abu Bakr, "Go forward." Abu Bakr went forward and entered the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and began making his way through the people until he stood behind Abu Bakr. He said: The people clapped, and Abu Bakr, when he entered the prayer, did not turn around. When Abu Bakr saw the clapping not stopping, he turned around, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, meaning "continue." When he said that, Abu Bakr paused briefly, praising Allah for the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "continue." Then Abu Bakr walked backward on his heels and stepped back. When the Prophet ﷺ saw that, he came forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, he said, "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from continuing?" He said, "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." And the Prophet ﷺ said to the people, "If something happens to you in your prayer, let the men say subhan Allah and let the women clap." Ibn Abi Hazim said in his hadith: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him like this, commanding him to pray. Abu Bakr raised his hand and praised Allah, then stepped back behind him. 'Abd al-A'la said in his hadith: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, meaning "stay as you are." Abu Bakr raised his hands and praised Allah and extolled Him for the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then stepped back.
