✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ came to it, the people used to assemble for prayer at the times of prayer without any call. The Messenger of God ﷺ intended to have a horn like the horn of the Jews, which they use to call to their prayers, but he disliked it. Then he ordered a bell to be made so that it could be struck to call the Muslims to prayer. While they were in that situation, Abdullah b. Zayd b. Abd Rabbih, brother of al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, was shown the call in a dream. He came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said to him, 'O Messenger of God, a visitor came to me this night; a man passed by me wearing two green garments, carrying a bell in his hand. I said, O servant of God, will you sell this bell? He said, And what will you do with it? I said, We will call the people to prayer with it. He said, Shall I direct you to something better than that? I said, What is it? He said: Say: God is most great, God is most great, God is most great, God is most great. I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Come to prayer, come to prayer. Come to success, come to success. God is most great, God is most great. There is no god but God. Then he paused a little, then he said the same as before, but made it odd, except that he said: The prayer has commenced, the prayer has commenced, the prayer has commenced. God is most great, God is most great. There is no god but God. When I told this to the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said: It is a true vision, God willing. Go with Bilal and teach it to him, for he has a louder voice than you. When Bilal called the adhan with it, Umar b. al-Khattab heard it while he was in his house, and he came out to the Messenger of God ﷺ dragging his cloak, saying: O Prophet of God, by the One who sent you with the truth, I saw the like of what he saw. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: To God be the praise; that is firmer.
