حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ:
كُنَّا نَتَحَامَلُ، فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَجِيءُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ الْعَظِيمَةِ، فَيُقَالُ: مُرَائِي، وَيَجِيءُ الرَّجُلُ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ، فَيُقَالُ: إِنَّ اللهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ هَذَا، فَنَزَلَتِ: الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لا يَجِدُونَ إِلا جُهْدَهُمْ.

✧ We used to support one another, and a man would come with a large charity and it would be said: "He is showing off." And a man would come with half a sa' and it would be said: "Allah is in no need of this." Then it was revealed: Those who disparage the believers who give voluntary charity and those who find nothing but their effort.
