✧ In the year of the ashes, when the land was barren in the regions, Umar b. al-Khattab wrote to Amr b. al-As: "From Abdullah Umar, Commander of the Believers, to al-As b. al-As. By my life, you do not care if you and those with you are fat while I and those with me are lean. O help!" Amr wrote back: "Peace. After that: at your service, at your service. A caravan is coming to you, its first part is with you and its last part is with me, though I hope to find a way to send some by sea." When the first of the caravan arrived, he summoned al-Zubayr and said, "Go out with the first of this caravan, head toward Najd with it, and bring me every household you can carry. For those you cannot carry, order each household to have a camel with what is on it, and tell them to wear the two cloaks that contain wheat, to slaughter the camel, to render its fat, to preserve its meat, to use its hide for shoes, then to take a quantity of dried meat, a quantity of fat, and a handful of flour, cook and eat until Allah brings them provision." Al-Zubayr refused to go out. He said, "By Allah, you will not find its like until you depart from this world." Then he summoned another—I think it was Talha—who refused. Then he summoned Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and he went out for that. When he returned, he sent him a thousand dinars. Abu Ubaydah said, "I did not work for you, O Ibn al-Khattab. I worked only for Allah, and I will not take anything for that." Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us in matters he sent us for, and we disliked it, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ insisted on that for us. So accept it, O man, and use it to help yourself in your worldly affairs and your religion." So Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah accepted it.
