✧ I was sitting with Qabisah when a group of his people came to him asking him regarding the marriage of their companion, and he refused to give them anything. When they left, I said: A group of your people came to you asking you regarding the marriage of a companion of theirs, and you are the chief of your people, yet you did not give them anything? He said: They asked me for something that was not right. If their companion had taken his penis and tied it with a leather strip until it withered, it would have been better for him than the asking they asked of me. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Begging is not lawful except for three: a man whose wealth is struck by a destructive calamity, so he asks until he obtains a sufficiency of livelihood, then withholds from begging. A man who bears a burden among his people, so he asks until he fulfills his burden, then withholds from begging. And a man for whom three people of understanding from his people swear by Allah that begging has become lawful for so-and-so. Anything other than that is unlawful gain; he consumes nothing but unlawfully.'
