✧ I was a hard-working man, so my father married me off. Then he visited me and said to the woman, 'How do you find your husband?' She said, 'A fine man, but he does not sleep and does not break his fast.' He said, 'My father then took hold of me and said, "I married you to a woman of the Muslims and you have confined her with your worship."' I did not care what he said to me, because of the strength and diligence I found in myself. Then that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'But I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast. So sleep, pray, break your fast, and fast three days of each month.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am stronger than that.' He said, 'Then fast the fast of Dawud: fast one day and break your fast one day, and recite the whole Qur'an every month.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am stronger than that.' He said, 'Recite it every fifteen days.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am stronger than that.' Husayn said: Mansur mentioned to me from Mujahid that it reached seven. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed every deed has a burst of energy, and every burst of energy has a slackening. Whoever's slackening is toward my sunnah has been guided, and whoever's slackening is toward other than that has perished.' Abdullah said, 'If I had accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that would be dearer to me than having the like of my family and my wealth. Today I am an old man, grown old and weak, and I dislike to abandon what the Messenger of Allah commanded me.'
