✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ turned aside, and I was with him, during the expedition of Tabuk before dawn. I turned aside with him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ made his camel kneel to relieve himself. I poured water from the waterskin over his hands, and he washed his palms, then he washed his face, then he uncovered his forearms, and the sleeves of his jubbah were tight, so he inserted his hand and brought them out from under the jubbah, and he washed them up to the elbows, then he wiped his head, then he performed ablution over his leather socks, then he mounted. We proceeded until we found the people in prayer, having put 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf forward, and he had led them in one rak'ah of the dawn prayer. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood and joined the row with the Muslims, and prayed behind 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf the second rak'ah. Then 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf said the salam, and the Messenger of God ﷺ stood to complete his prayer. The Muslims were alarmed and said subhan Allah repeatedly because they had preceded the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer. When the Messenger of God ﷺ said the salam, he said to them: You have done well, or you have done correctly.
