Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1702

✧ Permission to Not Wait for the Imam When He Is Late and the Command for the Congregation to Appoint One of Them as Imam

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ حُمَيْدًا قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي بَكْرٌ عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ:

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَخَلَّفَ، فَتَخَلَّفَ مَعَهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ، وَقَالَ: قَالَ: فَانْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى النَّاسِ وَقَدْ صَلَّى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ رَكْعَةً، فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ بِجِيئَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ صَلِّ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الصَّلَاةَ وَسَلَّمَ، " قَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَالْمُغِيرَةُ فَأَكْمَلَا مَا سَبَقَهُمَا

Translation

✧ The Prophet ﷺ stayed behind, and al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah stayed behind with him. Then he mentioned the hadith in full, and said: He said: We reached the people, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf had already led one rak'ah. When he sensed the coming of the Prophet ﷺ, he went to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ signaled to him to pray. When 'Abd al-Rahman finished the prayer and gave the salutation, the Prophet ﷺ and al-Mughirah stood up and completed what had preceded them.
