Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud

Translation

✧ [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some obscure words] Ibn Hishām said: yakbituhum means: He grieves them with the severest grief, and prevents them from what they sought. Dhu al-Rummah said: I do not forget a cause of grief, but I shall never forget our halting place, in perplexity between one made glad and one made grieved. And yakbituhum (also) means: He throws them down upon their faces. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then He said to Muḥammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ: 'You have no part in the matter, whether He turns to them or punishes them, for they are evildoers'—that is, you have no share in the judgment concerning My servants, except what I have commanded you regarding them; either I turn to them in My mercy, if I will, and do it, or I punish them for their sins, as is My right, for they are evildoers—that is, they have deserved that because of their disobedience to Me. 'And God is forgiving, merciful'—that is, He forgives sin and has mercy on His servants, despite what is in them.
