Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud
Translation
✧ When two parties among you were about to lose heart—that is, to desert one another. The two parties were Banū Salamah b. Jusham b. al-Khazraj and Banū Ḥārithah b. al-Nabīt of al-Aws; they were the two wings. Allah, exalted is He, says: “And Allah was their protector”—that is, the one who defended them from the failure they had resolved upon. That was only because what came from them arose from weakness and frailty that befell them, not from doubt in their religion; so He undertook to ward that off from them by His mercy and His gracious care, until they were safe from their frailty and weakness and caught up with their Prophet ﷺ. Ibn Hishām said: A man of al-Asd, one of the people of knowledge, related to me; he said: The two parties said: “We would not like that we had not resolved upon what we resolved upon, for Allah took charge of us in that matter.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Allah, exalted is He, says: “And upon Allah let the believers rely”—that is, whoever among the believers has weakness, let him rely upon Me and seek My aid; I will help him in his affair, defend him, until I bring him through, ward off from him, and strengthen him in his intention. “And Allah already gave you victory at Badr while you were weak; so fear Allah that you may be grateful”—that is, fear Me, for that is gratitude for My favor. “And Allah already gave you victory at Badr while you were fewer in number and weaker in strength, when you said to the believers: Is it not enough for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down? Yes, if you are patient and fear Allah and they come upon you in this their fury, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels, marked”—that is, if you are patient before My enemy and obey My command, and they come upon you from this direction of theirs, I will reinforce you with five thousand angels, marked.
