Abū Sufyān's message to the Messenger conveyed by a caravan

Translation

✧ [Ṣafwān’s restraining Abū Sufyān from renewing the attack] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to us: When Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb withdrew on the day of Uḥud, he intended to return to Madinah to exterminate the remainder of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf said to them: Do not do it, for the people have been provoked to war, and we fear that there may be fighting for them other than what took place. So return. And they returned. The Prophet ﷺ said, while he was at Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad, when news reached him that they had resolved to return: By Him in whose hand is my soul, stones were marked out for them; had they been met with them in the morning, they would have been like yesterday that has passed.
