Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān in reply to Abū Sufyān] Ḥassān b. Thābit, as Ibn Hishām mentioned, answered him, saying: You mentioned the noble chiefs from the family of Hāshim, yet you are not, for a falsehood you spoke, one to hit the mark. Do you marvel that I singled out Ḥamzah from among them, a noble one, when you yourself called him noble? Did they not kill ʿAmr, ʿUtbah and his son, Shaybah, al-Ḥajjāj, and Ibn Ḥabīb, on the morning when al-ʿĀṣī called upon ʿAlī and startled him with a blow of a sharp sword that he dyed with blood? Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shaʿūb said, mentioning his hand in the presence of Abū Sufyān for what he had warded off from him, saying: Were it not for my defense, O son of Ḥarb, and my being present, you would have been found on the day of al-Naʿf unable to answer. And were it not for my wheeling the colt at al-Naʿf, hyenas would have gathered over him, or the hounds of Kulayb. Ibn Hishām said: His words "over him, or the hounds" are from other than Ibn Isḥāq. [The poetry of al-Ḥārith in reply to Abū Sufyān as well] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥārith b. Hishām said, answering Abū Sufyān: I repaid them one day at Badr with the like of it, upon a swift horse with flowing pace and youthful vigor, at the field of Badr, or else I would have set up wailing women over you, and you would not have heeded the loss of a loved one. And had you witnessed what came from them, you would have returned with a heart, as long as I live, pierced with terror. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Ḥārith b. Hishām answered Abū Sufyān only because he thought that Abū Sufyān had alluded to him in his saying: "My colt did not cease to be a place where the dogs were driven away from them," referring to the flight of al-Ḥārith on the day of Badr.
