Translation

✧ [Poem of al-Aswad on their killing Ḥanẓalah and Abū Sufyān] (Ibn Isḥāq said): Shaddād b. al-Aswad said concerning his killing Ḥanẓalah: I will surely protect my companion and myself With a thrust like the rays of the sun. And Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb said, mentioning his steadfastness on that day and the assistance of Ibn Shaʿūb to him against Ḥanẓalah: Had I wished, a dark bay long-bodied mare would have saved me, And I would not have borne the favour to Ibn Shaʿūb. My colt did not cease to be the place where the dog of them is driven away, From early morning until it drew near to setting. I fight them and call out, "O for Ghālib!", And I push them away from me with a firm pillar. So weep, and do not heed the words of a censurer, And do not weary of tears and wailing. For your father and brothers who followed one another, For them tears were due as a share. And what was in the soul was consoled that I Killed every noble one of the Najjār. And from Hāshim a noble chief and Muṣʿab, He was not a coward in the battle. Had I not assuaged my soul of them, It would have been a splinter in the heart with scars. They returned, and the cloaks among them had been destroyed; Upon them was a calamity of one who perishes and is grieved. There befell them one who was not a match for their blood, Nor in a plan was he a striker.
