The slaying of Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr

Translation

✧ The killing of Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr Ibn Isḥāq said: Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr fought in defense of the Messenger of God ﷺ until he was killed. The one who killed him was Ibn Qamiʾah al-Laythī, who thought he was the Messenger of God ﷺ, so he returned to Quraysh and said, “I have killed Muḥammad.” When Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr was killed, the Messenger of God ﷺ gave the banner to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and men from the Muslims fought. Ibn Hishām said: Maslamah b. ʿAlqamah al-Māzinī narrated to me saying: When the fighting grew fierce on the day of Uḥud, the Messenger of God ﷺ sat beneath the banner of the Anṣār, and the Messenger of God ﷺ sent to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may God be pleased with him): “Advance with the banner.” So ʿAlī advanced and said: “I am Abū al-Fuṣam”—or it is said Abū al-Quṣam, according to what Ibn Hishām said—then Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah, the bearer of the polytheists’ banner, called out to him: “Would you, O Abā al-Quṣam, have any need for single combat?” He said: “Yes.” They came forth between the two lines and exchanged two blows; ʿAlī struck him and threw him down, then turned away from him and did not finish him off. His companions said to him: “Why did you not finish him off?” He said: “He faced me with his private parts, and kinship moved me away from him, and I knew that God, mighty and majestic, had killed him.” It is said that Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah came out between the two lines and called: “I am a breaker! Who will come out for single combat?” No one came out to him. Then he said: “O companions of Muḥammad, you claim that your slain are in Paradise and our slain are in the Fire. By al-Lāt, you have lied! If you truly knew that, some of you would have come out against me.” So ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib went out to him; they exchanged two blows, and ʿAlī struck him and killed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ killed Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah.
