The affair of ʿĀṣim b. Thābit
[ شَأْنُ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ] وَقَاتَلَ عَاصِمُ بْنُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَقْلَحِ، فَقَتَلَ مُسَافِعَ بْنَ طَلْحَةَ وَأَخَاهُ الْجُلَاسَ بْنَ طَلْحَةَ، كِلَاهُمَا يَشْعُرُهُ سَهْمًا، فَيَأْتِي أُمَّهُ سُلَافَةَ، فَيَضَعُ رَأْسَهُ فِي حِجْرِهَا فَتَقُولُ: يَا بُنَيَّ، مَنْ أَصَابَكَ ؟ فَيَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا حِينَ رَمَانِي وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: خُذْهَا وَأَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي الْأَقْلَحِ. فَنَذَرْتُ إنْ أَمْكَنَهَا اللَّهُ مِنْ رَأْسِ عَاصِمٍ أَنْ تُشْرَبَ فِيهِ الْخَمْرُ، وَكَانَ عَاصِمٌ قَدْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ أَنْ لَا يَمَسَّ مُشْرِكًا أَبَدًا، وَلَا يَمَسَّهُ مُشْرِكٌ. وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ يَوْمئِذٍ، وَهُوَ يَحْمِلُ لِوَاءَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ: إنَّ عَلَى أَهْلِ اللِّوَاءِ حَقَّا أَنْ يَخْضِبُوا الصَّعْدَةَ أَوْ تَنْدَقَّا فَقَتَلَهُ حَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ
Translation
✧ [ The affair of ʿĀṣim b. Thābit ] And ʿĀṣim b. Thābit b. Abī al-Aqlaḥ fought and killed Musāfiʿ b. Ṭalḥah and his brother al-Julās b. Ṭalḥah, each of them he pierced with an arrow. Then he went to their mother Sulāfah and placed his head in her lap, and she said: "O my son, who struck you?" He said: "I heard a man when he shot me saying: 'Take it, and I am the son of Abī al-Aqlaḥ.'" So she vowed that if God granted her power over the head of ʿĀṣim, she would drink wine from it. ʿĀṣim had made a covenant with God that he would never touch a polytheist, nor would a polytheist ever touch him. And ʿUthmān b. Abī Ṭalḥah said on that day, while he was carrying the banner of the polytheists: "Surely the bearers of the banner have a duty, that they dye the spear-point or it be shattered." And Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib killed him.
