The affair of Abū Dujānah
Translation
✧ [The affair of Abū Dujānah] The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Who will take this sword with its due?” Some men stood up to him, but he withheld it from them; until Abū Dujānah Simāk b. Kharashah, brother of the Banū Sāʿidah, stood up to him and said: “And what is its due, O Messenger of God?” He said: “That you strike the enemy with it until it bends.” He said: “I will take it, O Messenger of God, with its due.” So he gave it to him. Abū Dujānah was a brave man who swaggered at war, when it occurred. When he was marked with a red band of his and he bound it on, people knew that he would fight. When he took the sword from the hand of the Messenger of God ﷺ, he brought out that band of his and bound it on his head, and began to strut between the two ranks. Ibn Isḥāq said: Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aslam, client of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, related to me, from a man of the Anṣār from the Banū Salimah, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, when he saw Abū Dujānah strutting: “That is a gait God detests, except in a place like this.” [The affair of Abū ʿĀmir the transgressor] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me: Abū ʿĀmir, ʿAbd ʿAmr b. Ṣayfī b. Mālik b. al-Nuʿmān, one of the Banū Ḍubayʿah, had gone out when he went out to Makkah, separating himself from the Messenger of God ﷺ, with fifty young men of the Aws—and some people said: they were fifteen men. He used to promise Quraysh that if he met his people, not two men among them would differ against him. When the people met, the first of them whom Abū ʿĀmir encountered was among the Aḥābīsh and the slaves of the people of Makkah. He called out: “O company of the Aws, I am Abū ʿĀmir.” They said: “May God not delight an eye with you, O transgressor”—Abū ʿĀmir used to be called in the Jāhiliyyah “the monk,” but the Messenger of God ﷺ named him “the transgressor.” When he heard their reply to him, he said: “My people have been stricken with evil after me.” Then he fought them fiercely, then he pelted them with stones.
