Translation

✧ [The Messenger's encampment in the mountain pass and his preparation for battle] He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ went on until he encamped at the mountain pass of Uḥud, on the side of the valley facing the mountain, and he placed his back and his army toward Uḥud. He said: 'Let none of you fight until we command him to fight.' Quraysh had sent out the baggage animals and horses into crops that belonged to the Muslims at al-Ṣamghah, part of Qanāh. A man of the Anṣār said when the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade fighting: 'Are the crops of Banū Qaylah to be grazed, and we have not yet struck?' And the Messenger of God ﷺ arrayed his forces for battle, he being among seven hundred men, and he placed over the archers ʿAbd Allāh b. Jubayr, the brother of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, who was marked that day with white garments, and the archers were fifty men. He said: 'Keep the cavalry away from us with arrows; let them not come upon us from behind. Whether it be for us or against us, remain in your place, that we may not be approached from your direction.' The Messenger of God ﷺ put on two coats of mail, and he handed the banner to Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, the brother of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār.
