What poetry was recited about the day of Badr

Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt said, weeping for Zamʿah b. al-Aswad and the slain of Banū Asad: “Eye, weep with flowing tears for Abū al-Ḥārith; do not withhold [tears] for Zamʿah. And weep for ʿAqīl b. Aswad, the lion of the day of battle and the charge. Those are Banū Asad, brothers of al-Jawzāʾ—no treachery and no deceit. They are the middle family of Kaʿb, and they are the peak of the hump and the foremost. They sprang from clans [whose honor is like] the hair of the head, and they attached to them [the quality of] protection. The sons of their paternal uncle, when war is present, their livers are pained for them. And they are the feeders when the rain withholds and [the clouds] pass away, so you see no small cloud.” Ibn Hishām said: This narration of this poetry is mixed up, not of sound construction. But Abū Muḥriz Khalaf al-Aḥmar and others recited to me, some relating what others did not: “Eye, weep with flowing tears for Abū al-Ḥārith; do not withhold [tears] for Zamʿah. And for ʿAqīl b. Aswad, the lion of war, for the day of battle and the charge. For the like of their destruction al-Jawzāʾ became empty—no treachery and no deceit. They are the middle family of Kaʿb, and among them is like the peak of the foremost. They sprang from clans [whose honor is like] the hair of the head, and they attached to them [the quality of] protection. The sons of their paternal uncle, when war is present, their livers are pained for them. And they are the feeders when the rain withholds and [the clouds] pass away, so you see no small cloud.”
