Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said: Ibn Hishām said: It is said: Rather, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith al-Sahmī said it: Wearers of coats of mail, led by one firm in resolve, sharp, not cowardly— I mean the Messenger of the God of creation, whom He favoured Over all mankind with piety and generosity. You claimed that you would protect your womenfolk, And claimed the water of Badr would not be reached. Then we arrived, and we did not heed your words Until we drank our fill, without stinting. Holding fast to a rope that is not cut, A firm rope of the ropes of God, extended. Among us is the Messenger, and among us is the truth we follow Until death, and a victory without limit. Faithful and sharp, a blazing star by which light is sought, A full moon that shone over all the noble ones. Ibn Hishām said: His verse: “Holding fast to a rope that is not cut” is from Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said: Banū Asad failed, and their raiders returned On the day of the pit with disgrace and shame. Among them Abū al-ʿĀṣī, struck down, slain outright, From the back of a true, swift courser. At a time when there was none to defend him with his weapons, When he fell in his place, slaughtered. And the man Zamaʿa—we left him with his throat Bleeding from a deep, flowing wound. Pillowed on his fair brow, covered with dust, The tip of his nose rubbed raw with foulness. And Ibn Qays escaped with the remnant of his clan, At the last gasp, turning away with wounds.
