What poetry was recited about the day of Badr
Translation
✧ [Poetry of al-Ḥārith in reply to Ḥassān, concerning what was said of poetry on the day of Badr] Al-Ḥārith b. Hishām answered him, as Ibn Hishām mentioned, saying: God knows best, I did not leave off fighting them until they hobbled my colt with a reddish-white stallion, foaming at the mouth; and I knew that if I fight one man, I would be killed, and my witnessing would not harm my enemy. So I turned away from them, while loved ones were among them, in hope for them of the punishment of a corrupting day. Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥārith said these words excusing his flight on the day of Badr. Ibn Hishām said: We have omitted from Ḥassān's ode three verses at its end, because he was obscene in them.
