The first worship of stones was among the descendants of Ishmael

Translation

✧ [The first worship of stones was among the Banū Ismāʿīl] Ibn Isḥāq said: They assert that the first worship of stones among the Banū Ismāʿīl was that no one of them departed from Makkah, when it became constricted for them and they sought spaciousness in the lands, without carrying with him a stone from the stones of the Ḥaram out of veneration for the Ḥaram. Wherever they encamped they would set it down and circumambulate it as they circumambulated the Kaʿbah, until that led them on to the point that they worshipped whatever stones they deemed excellent and were pleased with, until the generations succeeded and they forgot what they had been upon and replaced the religion of Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl with other than it. So they worshipped idols and came to the errors that the nations before them had been upon. Yet among them, despite that, there remained remnants of the covenant of Ibrāhīm to which they clung: veneration of the House, circumambulation of it, the ḥajj and the ʿumrah, standing at ʿArafah and Muzdalifah, offering the sacrificial camels, and the talbiyah for the ḥajj and the ʿumrah, while introducing into it what did not belong to it. Kinānah and Quraysh, when they made the talbiyah, would say: “Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk; labbayka lā sharīka laka, illā sharīkan huwa laka; tamlikuhu wa mā malak.” So they would declare His oneness in the talbiyah, then they would bring their idols alongside Him and place the ownership of them in His hand. Allah, blessed and exalted, says to Muḥammad ﷺ: And most of them do not believe in Allah without associating others with Him, meaning they do not affirm My oneness, acknowledging My right, except that they set up with Me a partner from among My creation.
