✧ [From Banū Makhzūm] Ibn Isḥāq said: And from Banū Makhzūm b. Yaqaẓah b. Murrah: Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad—and the name of Abū Salamah is ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Asad b. Hilāl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm—and Shammās b. ʿUthmān b. al-Sharīd b. Suwayd b. Harmī b. ʿĀmir b. Makhzūm. [The reason for naming al-Shammās] Ibn Hishām said: The name of Shammās is ʿUthmān. He was only named Shammās because a shammās (deacon) from among the deacons came to Makkah in the Jāhiliyyah, and he was handsome, so the people marveled at his beauty. Then ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, who was Shammās's maternal uncle, said: "Here, I will bring you a shammās more handsome than him." So he brought his sister's son, ʿUthmān b. ʿUthmān, and he was named Shammās, as Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī and others mentioned. Ibn Isḥāq said: And al-Arqam b. Abī al-Arqam—and the name of Abū al-Arqam is ʿAbd Manāf b. Asad, and Asad was given the kunyah Abū Jundub b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm—and ʿAmmār b. Yāsir. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAmmār b. Yāsir is an ʿAnsī, from Madḥij. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Muʿattib b. ʿAwf b. ʿĀmir b. al-Faḍl b. ʿAfīf b. Kulayb b. Ḥubshiyyah b. Salūl b. Kaʿb b. ʿAmr, an ally of theirs from Khuzāʿah—he is the one called ʿAyhāmah. Five persons.
