What was revealed concerning the division of the spoils

Translation
✧ [What was revealed concerning the division of the fayʾ] Then He informed them of the shares of the fayʾ and His ruling concerning it, when He made it lawful for them, and He said: “And know that whatever you gain as spoils, then for Allah is one fifth of it, and for the Messenger, and for the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allah and what We sent down upon Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day the two forces met; and Allah is over all things powerful” (Q 8:41) — that is, the day on which by My power I separated between truth and falsehood, the day the two forces from among you and from among them met, when you were on the near side of the valley and they were on the far side of the valley towards Makkah, and the caravan was below you — that is, the caravan of Abū Sufyān which you went out to seize and they went out to protect it, without any appointment between you and them. “And had you made an appointment, you would have differed concerning the appointment” (Q 8:42) — that is, had that been by an appointment from you and from them, then when their great number and your small number had reached you, you would not have met them; but it was so that Allah might accomplish a matter that was to be done — that is, so that He might accomplish by His power what He willed of strengthening Islam and its people and humiliating disbelief and its people, without any trial from you, and so He did what He willed of that by His kindness. Then He said: “That those who perish might perish upon clear evidence, and those who live might live upon clear evidence; and indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing” (Q 8:42) — that is, so that those who disbelieve might disbelieve after the proof because of what they saw of the sign and the lesson, and those who believe might believe upon the like of that.
