The story of the king of al-Ḥaḍr

Translation

✧ The story of the king of al-Ḥaḍr [the lineage of al-Nuʿmān, something about al-Ḥaḍr, and the poetry of ʿAdī about it] Ibn Hishām said: Khallād b. Qurrah b. Khālid al-Sadūsī related to me from Jannād, or from one of the scholars of the people of al-Kūfah regarding genealogy: that it is said that al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir was from the descendants of Sāṭirūn, king of al-Ḥaḍr. Al-Ḥaḍr is a great fortress like a city, situated on the bank of the Euphrates. It is the one which ʿAdī b. Zayd mentioned in his saying: And the brother of al-Ḥaḍr when he built it, and when the Tigris and al-Khābūr yielded tribute to it, He erected it with marble and coated it with plaster, so for the birds in its summits are nests. The vicissitudes of fate did not spare him, so kingship departed from him, and its gate is deserted. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are from a qaṣīdah of his. And that which Abū Duwād al-Iyādī mentioned in his saying: I see death has descended from al-Ḥaḍr upon the lord of its people, al-Sāṭirūn. This verse is from a qaṣīdah of his. It is said that it belongs to Khalaf al-Aḥmar, and it is said: to Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah.
