The Casting of the Polytheists into the Well
Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān concerning those who were cast into the well] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said: I recognized the abodes of Zaynab at al-Kathīb, like the writing of revelation on a fresh parchment. The winds have made them their own, along with every dark cloud of the early rain, pouring down in torrents. Its trace has become worn out, and it has become a desolate waste after its beloved inhabitant. So leave off remembrance every day, and drive back the heat of the sorrowful breast. And tell of that in which there is no fault, with a truthfulness unlike the telling of the liar: Of what the Sovereign wrought for us on the morning of Badr, among the polytheists, of our allotted share. On a morning when their gathered host was like Ḥirāʾ, whose pillars appeared at the approach of sunset. We met them with a host from among us, like lions of the thicket, beardless youths and gray-haired men, Before Muḥammad, they supported him against the enemies in the blaze of wars, In their hands were keen swords, and every tried spear with thick knots. The Banū al-Aws, the noble ones, were supported by the Banū al-Najjār in the firm religion. So we left Abū Jahl prostrate, and ʿUtbah we left on the stony ground, And Shaybah we left among men of noble lineage, noble when their descent is counted. The Messenger of God called to them when we had thrown them in heaps into the well: "Did you not find that my words were true, and that the command of God seizes the hearts?" But they did not speak; and had they spoken, they would have said: "You spoke the truth, and you were a man of sound judgment." Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded that they be cast into the well, ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah was taken and dragged to the well. The Messenger of God ﷺ looked — as far as it has reached me — at the face of Abū Ḥudhayfah b. ʿUtbah, and behold, he was sorrowful, his color changed. He said: "O Abū Ḥudhayfah, perhaps something concerning your father has entered you?" Or as he ﷺ said. He replied: "No, by God, O Messenger of God, I have no doubt about my father nor about his death. But I used to know in my father sound judgment, forbearance, and excellence, and I hoped that this would guide him to Islam. So when I saw what befell him, and remembered the disbelief upon which he died, after what I had hoped for him, that grieved me." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ supplicated for him with good, and spoke good to him.
