The Messenger's Throwing Pebbles at the Polytheists
Translation
✧ [The Messenger's throwing pebbles at the polytheists] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ took a handful of pebbles and faced Quraysh with them, then he said: "May the faces be ugly!" Then he blew them at them, and he commanded his companions, saying: "Attack!" And the defeat occurred. God Most High killed those of the champions of Quraysh who were killed, and captured those of their nobles who were captured. When the people set their hands to taking captives, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was in the booth, Saʿd b. Muʿādh was standing at the door of the booth in which the Messenger of God ﷺ was, girded with a sword, among a group of the Anṣār guarding the Messenger of God ﷺ, fearing for him a return of the enemy. And the Messenger of God ﷺ saw—as I was told—in the face of Saʿd b. Muʿādh displeasure at what the people were doing. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "By God, O Saʿd, it is as if you dislike what the people are doing." He said: "Yes, by God, O Messenger of God, it was the first battle which God brought upon the people of polytheism. Being thorough in killing the people of polytheism is dearer to me than sparing the men."
