The Departure of Quraysh

Translation

✧ [The departure of Quraysh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh had departed when morning came, and they advanced. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw them coming down from al-ʿAqanqal—which is the sand hill from which they came into the valley—he said: 'O God, this is Quraysh, who have come with their pride and their boasting, opposing You and denying Your Messenger. O God, grant me the victory You promised me. O God, destroy them this morning.' And the Messenger of God ﷺ had said—when he saw ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah among the people on a red camel of his: 'If there is any good in anyone among the people, it is with the owner of the red camel. If they obey him, they will be rightly guided.' Khufāf b. Aymāʾ b. Raḥaḍah al-Ghifārī—or his father Aymāʾ b. Raḥaḍah al-Ghifārī—had sent to Quraysh, when they passed by him, a son of his with some of his camels as a gift for them, and he said: 'If you would like us to reinforce you with weapons and men, we will do so.' He said: They sent back to him with his son: 'May kinship keep you close. You have fulfilled what was incumbent upon you. By my life, if we are only fighting men, there is no weakness in us against them; and if we are only fighting God, as Muḥammad claims, no one has any strength against God.'
