Abu Sufyan's Caution and His Flight with the Caravan

Translation

✧ [Abū Sufyān's precaution and his flight with the caravan] Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb came forward until he advanced ahead of the caravan out of caution, until he reached the water. He said to Majdī b. ʿAmr: "Have you perceived anyone?" He replied: "I have not seen anyone I would find suspicious, except that I did see two riders who made their camels kneel by that hill, then drew water in a waterskin of theirs, then departed." Abū Sufyān went to their kneeling place, took some of the droppings of their two camels, and crumbled it; and behold, there were date stones in it. He said: "These, by God, are the fodder of Yathrib." He returned to his companions quickly, turned the face of his caravan away from the road, took it along the coast, left Badr on his left, and went on until he hastened.
