Genealogical sequence from the descendants of Ishmael (peace be upon him)
[ وَصَاةُ الرَّسُولِ ﷺ بِأَهْلِ مِصْرَ وَسَبَبُ ذَلِكَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ مَوْلَى غُفْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، قَالَ: اللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ، أَهْلِ الْمَدَرَةِ السَّوْدَاءِ السُّحْمِ الْجِعَادِ، فَإِنَّ لَهُمْ نَسَبًا وَصِهْرًا قَالَ عُمَرُ مَوْلَى غُفْرَةَ: نَسَبُهُمْ، أَنَّ أُمَّ إسْمَاعِيلَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْهُمْ. وَصِهْرُهُمْ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَسَرَّرَ فِيهِمْ. قَالَ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ: أُمُّ إسْمَاعِيلَ: هَاجَرُ، مِنْ أُمِّ الْعَرَبِ، قَرْيَةٍ كَانَتْ أَمَامَ الْفَرَمَا مِنْ مِصْرَ. وَأُمُّ إبْرَاهِيمَ مَارِيَةُ سُرِّيَّةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، الَّتِي أَهْدَاهَا لَهُ الْمُقَوْقِسُ مِنْ حَفْنٍ مِنْ كُورَةِ أنْصِنا. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شِهَابِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ، ثُمَّ السُّلَمِيَّ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: إذَا افْتَتَحْتُمْ مِصْرَ فَاسْتَوْصُوا بِأَهْلِهَا خَيْرًا، فَإِنَّ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةً وَرَحِمًا فَقُلْتُ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الزُّهْرِيِّ: مَا الرَّحِمُ الَّتِي ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَهُمْ ؟ فَقَالَ: كَانَتْ هَاجَرُ أُمُّ إسْمَاعِيلَ مِنْهُمْ
Translation
✧ [The Messenger's ﷺ injunction concerning the people of Egypt and its reason] Ibn Hisham said: ʿAbd Allah b. Wahb narrated to us from ʿAbd Allah b. Lahiʿah, from ʿUmar, the mawlā of Ghufrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah, Allah, regarding the protected people, the people of the black mud-brick dwellings, dark-skinned and curly-haired, for they have a lineage (nasab) and a marriage relation (ṣihr)." ʿUmar, the mawlā of Ghufrah, said: "Their lineage is that the mother of Ismaʿil, the Prophet ﷺ, was from them. And their marriage relation is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a concubine from among them." Ibn Lahiʿah said: "The mother of Ismaʿil is Hagar, from Umm al-ʿArab, a village that was before al-Faramā in Egypt. And the mother of Ibrahim is Māriyah, the concubine of the Prophet ﷺ, whom al-Muqawqis gave to him from Ḥafn, from the district of Anṣinā." Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Muslim b. ʿUbayd Allah b. Shihāb al-Zuhrī narrated to me that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allah b. Kaʿb b. Mālik al-Anṣārī, then al-Sulamī, narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If you conquer Egypt, treat its people well, for they have a covenant (dhimmah) and a kinship (raḥim)." I said to Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī: "What is the kinship that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned regarding them?" He said: "Hagar, the mother of Ismaʿil, was from them."
