Sirat Ibn Hisham 68
The rising of Sayf b. Dhī Yazan and the reign of Wahriz over Yemen
Translation
✧ [Al-Nuʿmān's intercession for Ibn Dhī Yazan with Kisrā] He went out until he came to al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, who was Kisrā's governor over al-Ḥīrah and the adjacent land of Iraq. He complained to him about the affair of the Abyssinians. Al-Nuʿmān said to him: "I have an audience with Kisrā every year, so stay until that time comes." He did so, then went out with him, and he brought him before Kisrā. Kisrā used to sit in the īwān of his audience chamber, in which was his crown. His crown was like a huge qanqal—so they claim—studded with rubies, pearls, and chrysolite, set in gold and silver, suspended by a chain of gold from the top of an arch in that audience chamber. His neck could not support his crown, so it was covered with cloths until he sat in that audience chamber; then he would put his head into the crown. When he was settled in his seat, the cloths were removed from it, and no man who had not seen him before could behold him without falling to his knees in awe of him. When Sayf b. Dhī Yazan entered upon him, he fell to his knees.
