The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation
Translation
✧ [What was sent down of the Qur'an concerning the creation of Jesus] Then He addressed them regarding the matter of Jesus ﷺ, and how the beginning of what God willed with him came to be. So say: "Indeed, God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran above all the worlds, as descendants one from another, and God is Hearing, Knowing." Then He mentioned the matter of the wife of 'Imran and her saying: "My Lord, indeed I have vowed to You what is in my womb, consecrated"—that is, I vowed it and made it dedicated, for worship of God, not benefiting from it for anything of this world—"so accept it from me; indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing." When she gave birth to her, she said: "My Lord, indeed I have given birth to a female"—and God knows best what she gave birth to—"and the male is not like the female"—that is, the male is not like the female for what I have made her, consecrated to You as an offering—"and indeed I have named her Maryam, and indeed I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from Satan the accursed." God, blessed and exalted, says: "So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and made her grow in a good manner, and placed her in the care of Zakariyya" after her father and mother. Ibn Hisham said: "Placed her in his care" means he took her in. [The account of Zakariyya and Maryam] Ibn Ishaq said: He made mention of her orphanhood, then related her account and the account of Zakariyya, and what he supplicated for and what He granted him when He bestowed Yahya upon him. Then He mentioned Maryam and the words of the angels to her: "O Maryam, indeed God has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. O Maryam, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow." God, mighty and majestic, says: "That is from the tidings of the unseen which We reveal to you, and you were not with them"—that is, you were not with them—"when they cast their pens as to which of them should take charge of Maryam." [Ibn Hisham's explanation of some unusual words] Ibn Hisham said: "Their pens" means their arrows, that is, the lots with which they drew for her, and the lot of Zakariyya came out, so he took charge of her, according to what al-Hasan b. Abi al-Hasan al-Basri said.
