The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation

Translation

✧ [What was revealed of the Qur'an concerning what the Jews and Christians brought about] Then He gathered the people of the two scriptures together, and mentioned what they brought about and what they innovated, from the Jews and Christians, and said: "Indeed, those who disbelieve in the signs of God and kill the prophets without right and kill those who enjoin justice from among the people" up to His saying: "Say, O God, Owner of Sovereignty" meaning Lord of the servants, and the King besides whom none judges among them, "You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty from whom You will, and You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good" meaning there is no god but You, "indeed, You are over all things competent" meaning none is able to do this but You, by Your authority and power. "You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night, and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living" by that power, "and You provide for whom You will without account." None is able to do that but You, and none does it except You. That is, if I had given Jesus authority over the things by which they claim that he is a god—of reviving the dead, healing the sick, creating birds from clay, and informing of hidden things—to make him thereby a sign for the people and a confirmation of his prophethood with which I sent him to his people, then indeed among My authority and power is what I did not give him: the granting of sovereignty to kings by the command of prophethood, and placing it where You will, and causing the night to enter the day, and the day to enter the night, and bringing the living out of the dead, and bringing the dead out of the living, and providing for whomever You will, righteous or wicked, without account. All of that I did not give Jesus authority over, nor did I grant it to him. Was there not for them in that a lesson and clear proof that if he were a god, all of that would be his? Yet in their knowledge he flees from kings and moves from them through the lands, from one country to another. [What was revealed of the Qur'an in exhorting the believers] Then He exhorted the believers and warned them, then said: "Say, if you love God" meaning if this saying of yours is true, out of love for God and veneration of Him, "then follow me, God will love you and forgive you your sins" meaning what is past of your disbelief, "and God is Forgiving, Merciful. Say, obey God and the Messenger. But if they turn away" meaning upon their disbelief, "then indeed God does not love the disbelievers."
