The statement of the Jews when the qiblah was changed to the Kaʿbah
Translation
✧ [Their concealment of what is in the Torah of the truth] And Muʿādh b. Jabal, brother of the Banū Salimah, and Saʿd b. Muʿādh, brother of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, and Khārijah b. Zayd, brother of the Balḥārith b. al-Khazraj, asked a group of the rabbis of the Jews about some of what is in the Torah, and they concealed it from them and refused to inform them of it. So God, exalted be He, sent down concerning them: Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of the clear proofs and guidance, after We made it plain to the people in the Book—those God curses them, and the cursers curse them (2:159). [Their response to the Prophet ﷺ when he called them to Islam] He said: And the Messenger of God ﷺ called the Jews from among the People of the Book to Islam and made them desire it, and warned them of God's punishment and His vengeance. So Rāfiʿ b. Khārijah and Mālik b. ʿAwf said to him: Nay, we follow, O Muḥammad, what we found our forefathers upon, for they were more knowing and better than us. So God, mighty and glorious be He, sent down concerning that, from their saying: And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has sent down," they say, "Nay, we follow what we found our forefathers upon." Even if their forefathers did not understand anything and were not guided? (2:170). [Their gathering in the market of Banū Qaynuqāʿ] And when God, mighty and glorious be He, smote Quraysh on the day of Badr, the Messenger of God ﷺ gathered the Jews in the market of Banū Qaynuqāʿ, when he came to Madinah, and said: O assembly of Jews, submit before God smites you with the like of what He smote Quraysh. They said to him: O Muḥammad, let not yourself be deceived that you killed a band of Quraysh; they were inexperienced men who did not know fighting. By God, if you fight us, you would know that we are the people, and that you have not met the like of us. So God, exalted be He, sent down concerning that, from their saying: Say to those who disbelieve, "You will be overcome and gathered to Hell, and evil is the resting place. Indeed, there was a sign for you in two hosts that met: one host fighting in the way of God and another disbelieving, seeing them as twice their number, with the eye's sight. And God supports with His help whom He wills. Indeed, in that is a lesson for those with insight" (3:12–13).
