The statement of the Jews when the qiblah was changed to the Kaʿbah

Translation
✧ [The Jews' statement when the qiblah was turned toward the Kaʿbah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the qiblah was turned from Syria to the Kaʿbah—and it was turned in Rajab, at the beginning of the seventeenth month after the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah—Rifāʿah b. Qays, Qardam b. ʿAmr, Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf, Rāfiʿ b. Abī Rāfiʿ, al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿAmr, the confederate of Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf, al-Rabīʿ b. al-Rabīʿ b. Abī l-Ḥuqayq, and Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ b. Abī l-Ḥuqayq came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Muḥammad, what has turned you away from your qiblah you used to follow, while you claim to be upon the religion of Abraham and his way? Return to your qiblah that you used to follow, and we will follow you and affirm you.” They only intended by that to tempt him away from his religion. So God Most High revealed concerning them: “The foolish among the people will say, ‘What has turned them away from their qiblah which they used to face?’ Say, ‘To God belong the east and the west; He guides whom He wills to a straight path.’ Thus We have made you a middle community, that you may be witnesses over the people, and the Messenger may be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might know who follows the Messenger from him who turns back on his heels—that is, as a trial and a test—and indeed it was a great thing except for those whom God has guided—that is, among the trials: those whom God has made firm. And God would not let your faith be lost—that is, your faith in the first qiblah, and your affirmation of your Prophet, and your following him to the latter qiblah, and your obedience to your Prophet concerning it: that is, He will surely give you the reward of both of them together. Indeed God is to the people full of kindness, merciful.” Then He Most High said: “We see the turning of your face to the heaven; so We will surely turn you to a qiblah that will please you. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque; and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it.” [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hishām said: “shaṭrahu”: its direction and its aim. ʿAmr b. Aḥmar al-Bāhilī—and Bāhilah is b. Yaʿṣir b. Saʿd b. Qays b. ʿAylān—said describing a she-camel of his: She runs with us toward Jamʿ while she is tying a knot; the knot has almost tightened from her trotting of the haqab. This verse is in a poem of his. And Qays b. Khuwaylid al-Hudhalī said describing his she-camel: Indeed al-naʿūs has within it a disease that mingles with it, so its direction is the gaze of two eyes, wearied. This verse is in some verses of his. Ibn Hishām said: al-naʿūs is his she-camel, and she had a disease, so he looked at her with the gaze of one weary, from his saying: “he is weary.” “And indeed those who have been given the Book know that it is the truth from their Lord, and God is not heedless of what they do. And if you bring to those who have been given the Book every sign, they will not follow your qiblah, nor will you follow their qiblah, nor will some of them follow the qiblah of others. And if you follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, then you will surely be among the wrongdoers.” Ibn Isḥāq said: up to His Most High saying: “the truth from your Lord, so be not among the doubters.”
